Building on knowledge acquired in the successful completion of Amharic levels 1 & 2, students will continue to acquire knowledge of everyday Amharic language and of the country and culture of Ethiopia, while strengthening their communicative competence and conversational proficiency, and simultaneously building a solid foundation in Amharic grammar, writing, listening and reading comprehension skills. You will be expected to memorize vocabulary and utilize it in both speech and writing.

LCTL 0169 - Amharic Cultural Landscape and Ethiopian Indigenous Knowledge
This course explores the cultural environment, social structure, and indigenous knowledge of Ethiopia. It implies an examination of how the culture of Amharic-speaking people contributes to and is interwoven with the broader spectrum of Ethiopian indigenous knowledge. This encompasses understanding the ways in which the physical, spiritual, and social aspects of the Amharic-speaking community reflect and sustain the culture as the collective wisdom passes down through generations. The course focuses on both the tangible and intangible elements of culture, such as language, rituals, economic practices, social norms, and artistic expressions and how these elements serve as a gateway to understanding Ethiopian identity in the Horn of Africa. It also gives pertinent focus to indigenous knowledge of environmental management, medicine and medication, and governance and leadership.
